4 Easy Timber Upgrades for Your Home

Sprucing up your home or having a quick refresh doesn’t need to cost a lot – it doesn’t even take a lot of time or skill to make some attractive, rustic home accessories to brighten up your rooms or even create functional furniture. Here are a few ideas for both the inside and outside of your home.

DIY Blanket Ladder

You may have seen the ladder trend on Pinterest or interior design magazines – if you don’t want to source an old ladder or buy more expensive versions, you can always make your own! Surprisingly, the project is relatively cheap and can take less than an hour to complete (plus drying time).

You’ll need around 16ft of wood in total, eight wood screws, and wood stain (choose a colour that matches your room). It’s also a good idea to sand down your wood to start if it’s not already smooth, since you don’t want splinters going into your towels. There’s a great tutorial on heytherehome.com.

Wooden Address Plate

If people are always having trouble figuring out your door number, or you just want to make the outside of your home more inviting, a wooden address plate is a great way to make a statement without spending too much. It’s fun and simple, and you can even add a small planter for succulents or flowers too.

This tutorial on Shanty-2-chic.com is simple and easy to follow – you can use metal numbers as they suggest, or just paint the numbers on by hand using a stencil.

Wooden Candle Holders

If you’re not that confident as a wood worker yet, start with something small – candle holders are easy, simple, and look fantastic. The basic idea is to get wood that you’d like to use as a base and drill holes the size of your candles. Thesweetestoccasion.com has a great tutorial on doing this safely, but you can use all sorts of wood rather than just planks.
